Melaye Alleges Intimidation, Removal of Billboards

By Yekini Jimoh The senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi West senatorial district, Senator Dino Melaye, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and agents of Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, of intimidation, harassment of the opposition and destruction of his billboards. However, the state government has denied the allegations, saying the allegations are unfounded and an attempt to cheaply blackmail the government. This was made known to journalists in Kabba yesterday by the Director General of Dino Melaye Senatorial Campaign Organisation, Chief Shola Ojo, during its inaugural meeting. Senators Melaye, Aidoko Kicks Against Kogi Govt’s $500m Loan Without Approval

The Senate has directed its Committee on Local and Foreign Debts to investigate allegation that the Kogi State is on the verge of borrowing the sum of $500 million (about N180 billion) from the United Arab Emirates. This was sequel to a motion raised by Senator Dino Melaye, who also pointed out that the State is already indebted to the sum of N40 billion. Melaye, who rose under Orders 42 and 52, added that the loan has been christened Loan of Debt Refinancing to avoid the Kogi State Government from approaching the National Assembly for approval. Melaye alleged that the loan would be used to fund the Kogi State and Presidential elections. He particularly expressed concern that a State, whose debt already stands at N40 billion, is borrowing N180 billion. “What it means is that the Government is borrowing to pay borrowed money,” he added. Kogi State Police Command has confirmed that it sent a detachment of officers to the house of Senator Dino Melaye at Aiyetoro-Gbede in Kogi State on October 11 to effect his arrest. In a statement in Lokoja, the command said it took the action in connection with the July 19 shooting of one of its operatives, Sgt. Danjuma Salihu by thugs suspected to be loyal to the senator. Ahmed Ogembe, Dino Melaye Win PDP Senate Ticket

Senators Ahmed Ogembe and  Dino Melaye have emerged as the Kogi Central and Kogi West West Senatorial candidates  of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) respectively,  for the 2019 general election. The duo emerged at the affirmation primaries conducted  on Tuesday. The exercise which was peaceful was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and some security personnel. Ahmed Ogembe who was unopposed is seeking his second term bid to represent Kogi Central at the Red Chamber.  At Preston Hotel in Kabba, where the primary of Kogi West was held, former Kogi West senatorial aspirant who had earlier stepped down for Melaye were present at the primaries with their supporters.  Those who stepped down for Melaye were former commissioner of local government and chieftaincy affairs, Tolorunjuwon Faniyi and the current reps member representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu federal constituency, Hon.
