By Yekini Jimoh Four drug dealers were reportedly drowned in River Niger in Lokoja, Kogi State, in an attempt to evade arrest by the officials of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The incident was said to have occurred last Monday evening while the officials moved to arrest the suspects with substances suspected to be cannabis. THISDAY reliably gathered that following a tip-off by members of the Adankolo community in Lokoja, men of the NDLEA invaded the community to arrest drug users and dealers in the area. It was further reliably gathered that officers swooped on the area and chase the suspect who took to their heels on sighting the officers. Four of the suspects were said to have run in to the river and got caught up by fishermen’s net and were trapped in between the net which eventually killed them. Photo: Insidestory  The Kogi State Government has placed a bounty of N100 million naira on useful information that will lead to the arrest of the killers of Adabenege Yusuf.  Gov Yahaya Bello made the pronouncement when he paid a condolence visit to the families of his slain aide on Tuesday, the day reported to have been a special outing for "Aneku Sementi," a traditional masquerade in the custody of Yusuf.  Recall that Yusuf and his driver, Zubair Musa were assassinated on Friday November 16th, 2018 along Obehira-Okene road.  Gov Bello in his visit to both bereaved families, promised to take all measures to bring the perpetrators to justice. The Governor also dropped a phone number reported to be one of his personal lines specially dedicated to security reports through text messages, while assuring that identities would be protected.

By Emma Okonji There are palpable fears that 10 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, may experience total outage of telecoms services in the next few days, following the shutdown of several base stations by the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service. The affected states, which are sharing borders with Kogi State, are Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara and Niger States. The Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), which raised the alarm yesterday in Lagos during a press conference, said as at Friday last week, the number of telecoms sites (base stations) affected was 70, but that as at yesterday, the number of affected sites had risen to 150, and more sites are likely to be affected in the next few days that will lead to total outage of telecoms services in the nine states. The House of Representatives committee on tertiary education and services has summoned Angela Miri, vice-chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, over alleged corruption. The vice-chancellor is expected to appear before the committee on Wednesday. The committee summoned Miri following a petition sent to President Muhammadu Buhari through Adamu Adamu, minister of education. The petition originated from Achegbulu Moses, an official of the university, and Rilwan Husseini, a student. The house of representatives and senate committee on tertiary institutions as well as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were copied in the petition.    The Kogi State Government, Saturday shutdown 70 telecommunications sites, leading to a total blackout of telecom services in the state and other neighbouring states. The Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ATLON), disclosed this in a press conference today in Lagos. “ALTON is worried by the action of the state government as it will jeopardise telecom services, especially to security agencies, financial services and other areas of the economy, ” said Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman of ALTON. Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi says the state is producing over four million metric tonnes of cassava out of the 58 million produced nationwide annually. The governor disclosed this at the inauguration ceremony of the “Cassava City Day” in Lokoja, with theme: “Exploring the Treasures of Cassava Crop”, organised by Kogi Agriculture Development Project (ADP). Bello, who was represented by the state’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Mr Kehinde Oloruntoba, reiterated his commitment to transforming agriculture in Kogi with emphasis on cassava. “Kogi is the leading cassava producing state in Nigeria with production of 4 million MT per annum of the nation’s total of 58 million MT per annum. “Many treasures abound in cassava crop and nothing is wasted from the leaves, stems and roots. “Cassava products abound such as flour, chips, sweeteners, ethanol, starch, fufu, tapioca, abacha, garri and other industrial products,” he said. Four staff members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a member of the NYSC and a three-year-old girl on Saturday died in an accident along Ajaokuta–Lokoja Road. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the victims were returning in the evening from Ayingba, Kogi, where they attended the wedding ceremony of another INEC staff. NAN gathered that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member was performing his primary assignment with INEC office in Lokoja and the child belonged to one of the INEC staff members. The Director of Voter Education and Publicity at Kogi Office of INEC, Mr Ahmed Biambo who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with NAN said that the victims were from the Information and Communication Technology and Account departments of INEC.
